WOODIE ALAN乐队介绍
Woodie Alan features American singer/guitarist Alan Paul and Chinese Lapsteel Guitar master Woodie Wu
As a senior writer and editor for Guitar World magazine for over 15 years, Alan Paul interviewed and wrote about a host of guitar greats, including B.B King, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia and the Allman Brothers Band's Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman. Since moving to Beijing two years ago, Alan has focused his writing on the subjects of living abroad, penning The Expat Life column for the Wall Street Journal online.
"I had a great career writing about music, but it's nice to spend more time playing it rather than talking about it," he says.
Woodie Wu has been a fixture on the Beijing rock and blues scene for over a decade. He was the co-founder of The Handsome Blacks, and then went on to play and record with The Fly (Cangying), Muma, Sand (Shazi_ -- with whom he recorded the "Stars Fell on My Head" album --and Skyscraper (Motianlou). He moved to Melbourne, Australia for three years where he performed regularly with The Stellsons and other bands before returning to Beijing two years ago.
A gifted guitarist, Woodie has focused his talents in recent years on the dobro and lap steel guitars. These traditional American instruments enliven many country and blues classics, lending them a distinctly mournful feel.
The Woodie Alan repertoire focuses on blues and American standard classics, as well as some material by Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly and others.
"Some of these songs are written by famous people like Bob Dylan and others come from relatively obscure guys guys like [Texas bluesman] Johnny Copeland but to me they are all American heroes," says Alan. "Singing these songs in China makes me feel a deeper connection to America than anything else does. And Woodie makes them all come alive for me."
"I never knew that the blues guitarist collaborator I have long been seeking was waiting for me in Beijing."
Woodie Alan usually performs as a five-piece band, featuring tenor saxophone, drums and bass. The Vineyard performance will be a special acoustic duo show.
